In 2019, Mordaunt buckled under characteristically no-nonsense interrogation on the parenting platform Mumsnet. Sometimes she is (to use her phrase) \u2018vocal on trans rights’, but at other times she does her best to dodge the \u2018what is a woman’ question.<\/p>\n

Because this week she claimed that she was actually the person responsible for removing the bizarre phrase \u2018pregnant people’ from that Bill, even though those amendments were made in the Lords. Her slippery account suggests she’s a candidate who knows she has misstepped.<\/p>\n

She previously won a BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the film – and received nominations\u00a0for the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.<\/p>\n
But polling finds that most voters think that trans people who identify as women should be allowed to use women’s bathrooms only after they’ve had surgery, and they’re not at all happy about athletes who were born male competing in women’s sports.<\/p>\n
Compare this sensible approach to Mordaunt’s comments in her book Greater: Britain After the Storm, published last year, which contains some surprisingly scathing comments about vintage British film and TV including Lawrence Of Arabia, and It Ain’t Half Hot, Mum, the last of which is described as \u2018a full-house bingo card of\u2026 casual racism, homophobia, white privilege, colonialism, transphobia, bullying, misogyny and sexual harassment’.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a free-speech event in Westminster this week, she expressed her frustration at the way transgender ideology is sweeping through our institutions \u2014 and preventing people from saying what they believe.<\/p>\n
Nor are most Britons supportive of what Badenoch calls the \u2018zero-sum identity politics we see today’.<\/p>\n
As a black British woman who spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, she has experienced first hand the culture of low expectations that can hold back people from ethnic minorities.<\/p>\n
Whereas Mordaunt finds herself on the back foot, so much so that the apparently trivial issues of gender neutral toilets and preferred personal pronouns may yet derail the leadership hopes of a minister used to talking about more serious issues of defence and international aid.<\/p>\n
As women and equalities minister, Badenoch was crystal clear on the fact that \u2018political race theory’ \u2014 or what is often nowadays described as \u2018wokeness’ \u2014 should have no place in the classroom.<\/p>\n
